
Ann M. Reed, MD – President
Ann M. Reed, MD is the Samuel L. Katz Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics at the Duke University School of Medicine. She previously served as Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Physician-in-Chief of Duke Children’s from 2014 through 2025 and continues to serve as a consultant for the North Carolina Children’s project. Prior to joining Duke, she was Chair of the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine and Physician-in-Chief of the Mayo Clinic Children’s Center. Dr. Reed is an internationally recognized pediatric rheumatologist, physician-scientist, educator, and academic leader whose career has focused has been on juvenile myositis and on advancing children’s health through excellence in clinical care, research, education, and institutional leadership.
Dr. Reed has held numerous national leadership positions in academic pediatrics and pediatric rheumatology. She served as President of the Association of Medical School Pediatric Department Chairs (AMSPDC) and has served as the subspeciality lead for the American Board of Pediatrics. She is a past myositis lead for the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA) and has held leadership roles within the American College of Rheumatology, and been a member of the American Pediatric Society, the Society for Pediatric Research, and other Pediatric Academic Societies. Throughout her career, she has been a strong advocate for physician-scientist development, pediatric research, and collaborative national research networks.
An internationally recognized investigator, Dr. Reed‘s research has transformed the understanding of juvenile dermatomyositis and other pediatric inflammatory myopathies. Her work has defined the genetic, immunologic, and molecular mechanisms underlying these rare diseases, identified novel biomarkers of disease activity and treatment response, and contributed to the development of internationally accepted outcome measures and clinical trial standards. Her research has been continuously supported by the National Institutes of Health and has fostered numerous national and international collaborations.
Dr. Reed has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, reviews, book chapters, and invited articles and has delivered hundreds of invited lectures, named lectureships, and visiting professorships throughout the United States and internationally. She has mentored numerous physician-scientists and academic leaders, many of whom now hold leadership positions at major academic medical centers. Throughout her career, Dr. Reed has been recognized for her outstanding contributions to pediatric research, academic medicine, mentorship, and leadership.
